Who are Baggio?
We caught up with South London alt-country ensemble, Baggio, and chatted about gin and tonics, next year's RB line up, Oasis, and their new song which is out today...
“It’s the furthest I’ve ever turned my distortion pedal up.”
Who are Baggio?
Some kind of amorphous gloop from South London who play country rock tunes and like to have a good time.
You have a new single out today, can you tell us a bit about it?
Southern Comforts was the closing track on our album, The Dreadful Human Tangle, which came out last year. On the record it’s a little acoustic number we recorded live, outside the studio. Shortly after the record came out we started jamming a full band version of it and dubbed it ‘the Crazy Horse version’, and it’s become a staple of our live sets since. Now we’ve recorded and put it out in the world. It’s the furthest I’ve ever turned my distortion pedal up.
We hear you're pals with Scrounge, collab?
no we hate those guys.
What's the last album you listened to and fell in love with?
Caveman Wakes Up by Friendship. Our pals in Brown Horse put me on to Friendship a couple years ago, sat around their dinner table at something o’clock after we’d played a show with them in Norwich. Got really into their album that was out then, but the new one this year is even better. So many perfect lines I wish I’d written. Free Association and Resident Evil are two of the best tunes of the year.
Fill in the blank: If you love [BLANK], you'll LOVE Baggio.
Watching loads of people on stage play songs about walking around and sitting on the bus.
What do you think is the key to a good music festival?
Good group of mates, an on-site Subway™️ and a certain degree of lawlessness.
Best gig you've been to so far this year?
Oasis at Wembley genuinely probably the best gig I’ve ever been to. We were sat pretty high up and it was so cool watching all those people sing along to Don’t Look Back In Anger or whatever. Also goated that Wembley were doing pints of Pink Gin & Tonic. A real high point of the G&T Summer™️ I’ve been having.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how to keep my music focused on community and the small world around us, but I did get pretty jealous of Liam having 80,000 people sing his songs back at him. That must be the best feeling in the world I reckon.
Favourite arcade game?
Probably say Mario Kart. More of a pub game head than an arcade head though. Been on a bit of a heater on the pool tables recently, and I’m hoping to maintain this form through to Rockaway.
Favourite song to play at a DJ set?
Soup by Baggio.
Who on the line up are you hoping to catch at Rockaway Beach in January?
Whitelands rule. I put them on a few years ago at The George Tavern and they blew my mind, can’t wait to see them again. Plus shout out Dry Cleaning and Prima Queen.
If people want to catch you before January, where should they be and when?
We’re supporting Rowan & Friends at The Ivy House this Friday (Rowan is one of the best songwriters in the country atm… go listen to Never Get That Feeling Back), then we’ve got a headline show at Piehouse Co-Op in Deptford on September 24th which will be really fun. Then we’re playing our friends Jake & Alice’s wedding in October - maybe see you there?
Baggio’s new single Southern Comforts (Crazy Horse version) is available to listen to across all streaming platforms.
